We zijn gaan eten op een van de eerste dagen van het nieuwe menu. We zaten binnen en konden de levendige atmosfeer in de keuken ervaren. Het restaurant heeft een gecontroleerde wildernis als binnentuin waaruit verse kruiden gehaald worden. Het menu is gecentreerd op groenten, maar vlees/vis kan bijgevraagd worden. Het de gerechten zijn echter zo goed dat het vlees niet nodig is.
Het personeel is vriendelijk en spontaan. We zullen zeker terugkomen

Perfecte locatie om er al fietsend naar toe te gaan. Vriendelijk onthaal en heel lekker gegeten voor wel behoorlijke prijs. Ontgoochelend was de coupe champagne die duidelijk einde-fles was.., nauwelijks bubbels… zware beginners(?) - fout. Ook kregen we bij de bestelde witte wijn geen fles te zien…. schenk de wijn uit aan tafel zodat de gasten desgewenst het etiket kunnen bekijken. Zwaar twijfelend om er nog terug te gaan.

Cool spot. Had dinner here and the night exceeded expectations on multiple levels.
The place is, as a whole, pretty cool. The interior is creatively decorated by a metallic frame interspersed with wooden panels. They also serve to lessen the volume; or at least that what I think because even though the place was packed on Saturday night and the music was playing, I could converse easily with my partner.
Service was pleasant, friendly and attentive regardless of the busy night.
Cocktails were delicate and tasty, the wine list extensive (natural wines prominently represented as well).
The food took a while to get to us, but we didn’t really mind as we didn’t get the feeling they had forgotten about us.
Before the main course the chef came to our table to apologise for the wait, which we thought was very thoughtful and did away with any doubts we could have had.
The food was tasteful, plentiful and varied in options.
We left content and happy.

Edit: half a week later and still very happy. After a little bit of research we do have something we’d like to address:
The advice was that my pregnant partner could have anything on the menu (but for the salmon). We looked it up afterwards and quite a few things on the menu were actually not suited for pregnant women. Not the biggest deal, but a note that could be improved on.
Also; I didn’t mention it but the prices were steep. The food was good and the prices pretty steep.
Still happy to have been here, would still recommend, just a few notes.

Hip and trendy little restaurant in a part of Antwerp that’s up and coming. Very cool interior and cozy terrace with the added thrill of not knowing whether or not you’ll be hit by the ball of one of the kids playing football in the square. Unfortunately, the food wasn’t as exciting. The starter was tempura of cauliflower and zucchini flower. The dish looked great but the vegetables lacked seasoning and came with a dip of cauliflower creme that was virtually tasteless. The main of pointed white cabbage with poached egg had a lot more taste but I was glad I took the non veggie option and added the fish (a small portion of plaice on the bone) otherwise this dish too would have been a bit dull. Mixed feelings. Creative? Yes! Outstanding food? Hmm.

Grote fan van de inrichting dus dat zat bij het binnenstappen al goed. Vriendelijke, vlotte en persoonlijke bediening. Enorm lekker gegeten, heel puur (mijn foto’s doen de gerechten geen eer aan… sorry 🫣). Ideale plaats als het iets meer mag kosten maar als je wil genieten van ongedwongen tafelen in een hip sfeertje.

Located on a pleasant square in the heart of Borgerhout, Essen serves dishes to suit everyone. The design of the restaurant is significant, stylish modern. Alot of windows and making use of wood, metal and concrete give it a modern look. The people working at Essen are friendly. Culinary they are finding their new baseline. Most dishes were really nice. Compared to their previous chapter it's a bit less refined without implying it's less tasteful.
